FRASER HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ ENSEMBLE
STATE JAZZ FESTIVAL—March 25, 2026
Congratulations to the Fraser H.S. Jazz Ensemble, which received straight First Division ratings at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association State Jazz Festival on Wednesday, March 25, hosted at Fraser High School.
Three judges grade the band in the areas of 1) Tone and Intonation, 2) Ensemble performance, 3) Interpretation, 4) Rhythm, and 5) Improvisation. Of the 15 possible grades, the Jazz Band received straight A’s for a truly “Superior” performance.
This is the 18th year that the Jazz Band has participated in this MSBOA competition.
Special thanks to Dan Hogan, Lisa Romanski-Lamond, and Ilija Milanovic for their help with the many facets of hosting band festivals. Thanks to Chef Kokenyesdi and the Culinary Arts department for providing wonderful meals for our guest at each festival.
Also, a huge thank you to April Fiedler, Nic Charland, and Jessica Sabol for their incredible support and assistance throughout this season and school year!!
Finally, thank you for your continued support of our outstanding students!

MSBOA STATE SOLO & ENSEMBLE RESULTS, MARCH 21, 2026
Congratulations to the Fraser High School band students that participated in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) State Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, March 21, at Warren Cousino High School. 16 events qualified at the District Solo & Ensemble Festival.
The soloists in grades 10, 11, and 12 compete at a sequenced proficiency level, which includes performing a solo piece, memorized scales, and sight-reading music they have never seen before. The proficiencies get increasingly more difficult as they progress by grade. For the proficiency ratings, a First Division is a score of 85 – 100, and a Second Division is a score of 70 – 84.
12 events received “Superior” First Division ratings, equivalent to the overall grade of an “A,” and 4 events received “Excellent” Second Division ratings equivalent to an overall grade of a “B.”
Included in the State competition were FOUR chamber ensembles, each comprised of 9 – 20 students, for a total of 54 ensemble members. Their talent, hard work, and dedication are exemplary!

MSBOA DISTRICT 16 BAND FESTIVAL RESULTS
March 12 & 13, 2026
Congratulations to the Fraser High School Varsity, Concert, and Symphony bands which participated in the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association District 16 Band Festival this past week at Roseville Middle School and Dakota High School.
The bands are adjudicated in performance by three judges, competing in 5 musical categories of Tone, Intonation, Rhythm, Technique, and Interpretation, for a total of 15 grades. Grades of A through E are assigned to each of the five categories, and using a 4 point-calculation method, overall ratings are assigned by each judge from First Division (Superior) to Fifth Division.
On Thursday, March 12, the 35-member Symphony Band competed in Class A and received straight First Division ratings in Performance, and a First Division rating in Sight Reading, earning an overall “Superior” First Division rating.
On Friday, March 13, the 55-member Varsity Band (all 9th graders) competed in Class D and received straight First Division ratings in Performance, and a First Division in Sight Reading, for an overall “Superior” First Division rating.
Also on Friday, March 13, the 84-member Concert Band competed in Class C and received straight First Division ratings in Performance, and a First Division rating in Sight Reading, for an overall “Superior” First Division rating.
A special thank you to Mrs. April Fiedler, FHS band assistant, and Mr. Sheldon Santamaria, RMS band director, for their assistance with each of the bands throughout the school year and the festival weekend. Their assistance is “INSTRUMENTAL” (😊) in the success of each ensemble. Also, thanks to each of the elementary music teachers, and Ms. Peyton Krantz, elementary band director, Mrs. Shana Fleming, elementary band assistant, Mr. Daniel Reeves, RMS choir director, Mr. Michael Perkins, FHS Piano Studies, and Mr. Nic Charland, FHS choir director, for their support, preparation, motivation, and assistance with the students in the Fraser Music program.

Congratulations to the 72 student-members of the FIVE high school chamber ensembles that participated on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Rochester High School in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District 16 Solo & Ensemble Festival. The Flute ensemble, Clarinet ensemble, Saxophone ensemble, and the Percussion ensemble each received First Division ratings, and the Brass ensemble received a Second Division rating.

MARCHING BAND FESTIVAL RESULTS, OCTOBER 8, 2025
Congratulations to the 162-member Fraser High School “Rambler” marching band on its First Division rating in Class A competition in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District 16 Marching Band Festival on Wednesday, October 8, held at L’Anse Creuse North High School.
This is the TWENTY-FOURTH consecutive year that the Fraser marching band has participated in marching band festival and earned a FIRST DIVISION rating. Marching Band Festival is a week-long event across the state of Michigan, and a total of 36 bands from District 16 (which covers bands from all of Macomb and St. Clair Counties, and parts of Oakland county) participated. This adds up to over 3200 STUDENT MUSICIANS taking the field in competition.
Three judges adjudicate the bands in the categories of music, marching, and general effect showmanship. Ratings range from First Division, which is a superior rating, equivalent to the grade of an “A”, to a Fifth Division. Our “Ramblers” earned an overall FIRST DIVISION rating with 11 A’s and 1 B in the categories of Music, Marching, and General Effect / Showmanship.
I would like to extend a special thank you to a fantastic team of professionals for which I am blessed to work with: Mrs. April Fiedler, Mr. Sheldon Santamaria, Mr. Luke Woods, Mrs. Peyton Krantz, Mr. George Dunn, Mr. Nick Hunter, Mrs. Shana Fleming, Ms. Halle Gross, and Ms. Sydney Maison. Without their professional assistance throughout the marching season, the level of student achievement would not be possible!
I would also like to thank ALL of the parents for their support and assistance throughout the season!

- The Instrumental Sweepstakes Trophy: awarded to the Fraser Bands for the school with two or more instrumental groups accumulating the highest number of points for two groups toward the perfect score of 200.
- The Choral Sweepstakes Trophy: awarded to the Fraser Choirs for the school with two or more vocal groups accumulating the highest number of points for two groups toward the perfect score of 200.
- The Outstanding Band Trophy: awarded to the Jazz Band for being the highest scoring group in the Band Division.
- The Adjudicators Award Trophy: awarded to the Symphonic Ensemble (band & choir) for achieving an average score of 92 or higher.

- The OVATION Award: to Abigail Pelkey (12th grade); presented to the student nominated by the directors whose contributions to their music program transcends the making of music, and represents the spirit of determination, inspiration, and service to others.
- The Fraser Singers Chamber Choir received the Certificate of Excellence invitation to the National “Festival of Gold” for Choral
- The Fraser Symphony Band received the Certificate of Excellence invitation to the National “Festival of Gold” for Band.
