MSBOA STATE SOLO & ENSEMBLE RESULTS
MARCH 18, 2023
Congratulations to the Fraser High School band students that participated in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, March 18, at Chippewa Valley High School. 18 events qualified at the District Solo & Ensemble Festival, with a total of 17 events participating at the State competition.
14 events received First Division ratings, equivalent to the overall grade of an “A”, and 2 events received Second Division ratings. The soloists in grades 10, 11, and 12 compete at a sequenced proficiency level, which include performing a solo piece, memorized scales, and sight-reading music they have never seen before. The proficiencies get increasingly more difficult as the students progress by grade. For the proficiency ratings, a First Division is a score of 85 – 100, and a Second Division is a score of 70 – 84.
Included in the State competition were FOUR chamber ensembles, each comprised of 9 – 20 students. Receiving a First Division ratings are the Flute Choir, Brass Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble. Their talent, hard work, and dedication are exemplary!

March 11 & 15, 2023
Congratulations to the Fraser High School Varsity, Concert, and Symphony bands which participated in the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association District 16 Band Festival this past week at Anchor Bay High School and Dakota High School.
The bands are adjudicated in performance by three judges, competing in 5 musical categories of Tone, Intonation, Rhythm, Technique, and Interpretation, for a total of 15 grades. Grades of A through E are assigned to each of the five categories, and using a 4 point-calculation method, overall ratings are assigned by each judge from First Division (Superior) to Fifth Division.
On Saturday, March 11, the 50-member Varsity Band (all 9th graders) competed in Class D and received 2 First Division ratings and 1 Second Division rating, earning a First Division rating in Performance. They received a First Division in Sight Reading, for an overall “Superior” First Division rating.
Also on Saturday, March 11, the 109-member Concert Band competed in Class C and received 2 First Division ratings and 1 Second Division rating, earning a First Division rating in Performance. They received a First Division rating in Sight Reading, for an overall “Superior” First Division rating.
On Wednesday, March 15, the 40-member Symphony Band competed in Class A and received straight First Division ratings in Performance, and a Second Division rating in Sight Reading, earning an overall “Superior” First Division rating.
A special thank you to Mrs. April Fiedler, FHS band assistant, for her assistance with each of the bands throughout the school year and the festival weekend. Also, thanks to each of the elementary general music teachers, and Ms. Peyton DeSchutter, elementary band director, Mrs. Shana Fleming, elementary band assistant, Mr. Sheldon Santamaria, RMS band director, Mr. Mike Perkins, RMS Choir director, Mrs. Karen Hagerty, FHS Piano Studies, and Mr. Nic Charland, FHS choir director, for their support, preparation, motivation, and assistance with the students in the Fraser Music program.

Congratulations to the 61 student-members of the FIVE high school chamber ensembles that participated on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Rochester High School in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District 16 Solo & Ensemble Festival. The Flute ensemble, Saxophone ensemble, Brass ensemble, and Percussion ensemble each received First Division ratings. The Clarinet ensemble received a Second Division rating.

MARCHING BAND FESTIVAL RESULTS
OCTOBER 12, 2022
Congratulations to the Class A, 183-member Fraser High School “Rambler” marching band on its First Division rating in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District 16 Marching Band Festival on Wednesday, October 12, held at Anchor Bay High School.
This is the TWENTY-FIRST consecutive year that the Fraser marching band has participated in marching band festival and earned a FIRST DIVISION. Marching Band Festival is a week-long event across the state of Michigan, and a total of 34 bands from District 16 (which covers bands from all of Macomb and St. Clair Counties, and parts of Oakland county) participated. This adds up to over 3250 STUDENT MUSICIANS taking the field in competition. For the SIXTEENTH year in a row, the Ramblers are the largest marching band in District 16.
Three judges adjudicate the bands in the categories of music, marching, and general effect showmanship. Ratings range from First Division, which is a superior rating, equivalent to the grade of an “A”, to a Fifth Division. Our “Ramblers” earned an overall FIRST DIVISION rating with 5 A’s and 4 B+’s in the categories of Music, Marching, and General Effect / Showmanship.
I would like to extend a special thank you to a fantastic team of professionals for which I am blessed to work with: Mrs. April Fiedler, Mr. Sheldon Santamaria, Mr. Luke Woods, Mr. George Dunn, Mr. Nick Hunter, Mr. Nick Calcaterra, Mrs. Amanda Buero, Ms. Halle Gross, Ms. Sydney Maison, Mrs. Diana Rodgers, and Mr. Gary Fleming. Without their professional assistance throughout the marching season, the level of student achievement would not be possible!
